The Secretary of State for communities and local government, Michael Gove, has written to all Councils encouraging them to support street parties by ‘for example relaxing road closure rules to enable them to take place as easily as possible’ for residents.
The Government published its updated basic guidance on how to organise a street party here. This refers residents and councils to this Street Party Site for detailed advice on everything including road closures and insurance which councils have very varied advice on.
He said that ‘We want celebrations to be even bigger and better than previous national celebrations and for as many people as possible across the nation to participate, at any point from January to December. You’ll be aware that an announcement was made to extend the bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June to provide opportunities for communities throughout the UK to come together to celebrate this historic milestone.’
Residents could hold full street parties or smaller informal street meets on any of the days.
The minister’s letter can be seen here.
