Older Neighbours and Street Parties

December 10, 2008 by Chris

Our new study shows what a great chance street parties can be for all generations to meet neighbours in their street.

Our study reveals the sensitivities between older and younger neighbours. Older people seem to not view the use of the street as a social space and they prefer relations with neighbours to be relatively more formal. Although the report is about the street party context, it reflects on important inter-generational issues about neighbouring in Britain today.

Streets Alive proposes that street parties can also increasingly provide a platform for the new generation of active older residents to take a leading role in building socially integrated neighbourhoods. Effective examples for residents to engage all generations of their neighbours in their street party are suggested.
