Council avoids road closure charges

July 2, 2013 by Chris

Southampton council has found a way of not charging residents for street party road closures.

Since the council privatised their highways services their service provider was requiring a £105 charge for each temporary road closure order. This is too much for most residents and would stop all happening.

Following advice from Streets Alive, they set up a monthly batch traffic order system. This means that residents have to apply for a closure by a fixed date 6 weeks in advance of a joint traffic order being drawn up for all the streets that month.

This means that the council can afford to fund the 5 monthly charges for the street party season from April to September.

More detail is explained on the council site here.
