The history of street parties evolved into neighbours’ events of today
Anyone holding a street party today is building on a long tradition.
Streets Alive has gathered stories from 80+ people who held them in times gone by.
This is now shown in full glory on our street party history page, which includes a great video.
Nowadays many people hold them just for the neighbourly fun of it, especially in Bristol which is the street party capital of the UK with over 100 being held each year.
In fact street parties started in 1919 as Peace Teas for children after the First World War.
This was all part of Streets Alive’s project Our Streets in 2013 which was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
