Street parties and events take many forms across the world, and are a great inspiration for our work in promoting a community spirit amongst neighbours.

National Neighbours Day in France

In France our partner, the European Federation of Local Solidarity, very successfully promote National Neighbours' Day which they have developed over 10 years. Now, over 5million people take part on the last Tuesday in May each year. Events are mainly held in apartment blocks and are promoted through the housing sector. They also promote this as European Neighbours' Day, though the day and date is tricky with the weather in the UK.

Spain has a culture of regular street parties and festivals in many forms.

Tenerife in the Canary Islands has a huge Carnival each year. This event has a long history and is a key part of the culture of the island community. See Corpus Christie festival www.gospain.org/fiestas/corpus where streets are decorated with fantastic flower and painted carpets.

Streets Alive in Australia

By pure coincidence a group also called Streets Alive in Australia successfully promoted 130 street parties in Perth in 1999, showing us what can be achieved. They still provide a Do It Yourself advice site www.streetsalive.org
